Description
Summary:Many factors can induce asthma attack. Interest in role of antioxidants, oxidative stress on asthma was increased in the recent years. Previous studies have reported that low level of plasma vitamin C is a risk factor of asthma attack, though evidence in asthma are still controversial. There is no study of plasma vitamin C and asthma in Indonesia. The purpose of the study is to analyze low level of plasma vitamin C as a risk factor for asthma attack in children. Plasma vitamin C in child with asthma compare with plasma vitamin C in child with asthma attack. This study was a case control study. Enrollment of subjects was consecutive. Subjects were all child with astma in Sardjiot general hospital between April 2012 to August 2013. Subjects divided into two groups: child with asthma and the other group child with asthma attack. Plasma vitamin C was examined with quantitative spectrophotometry method. Subjects characteristics include age, sex, history contact with pet, contact with house dust mites, passive smoker, food allergy, respiratory tract infection, and level of plasma vitamin C. Bivariate analysis with chi-square (p < 0,05) and odds ratio. There were no differences in plasma vitamin C between group with asthma attack and asthma (p=0,77), odds ratio 1,18 (95%CI: 0,32-3,64). Respiratory tract infection as a risk factor for asthma attack in this study, with p=0,006 and odds ratio 3,6 (95% CI: 1,41 9,19).
