Summary: | Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastic has been widely used for
replacement wood, glass and metal materials. However it has some disadvantage
such as low in hardness, friction resistance and heat resistance. One of the
methods to improve mechanical properties of ABS plastic is using chrome
electroplating. In this study, effects of electrical current, electroplating time and
the type of solution to the mechanical properties of ABS plastic was investigated.
ABS plastic as specimen was activated, before chrome plating by palladium
and electroless nickel plating. In chrome electroplating process electrical currents,
electroplating time and composition of solutions were varied. Some measurements
such as micro hardness, friction resistance, surface roughness, layer thickness test
were conducted in order to compare the results before and after chrome
electroplating process.
Chrome electroplating on ABS plastic improved surface hardness, surface
roughness, friction resistance and chrome layer thickness of the specimen. The
highest values in surface hardness, friction resistance and layer thickness are
obtained on specimens using solution II, 6 ampere and 15 minutes.
