Summary: | Pepper or Capsicum is one of the commodity that can be used as an ornamental
plant. Pepper as an ornamental plant must have qualities that can add beauty so it can
be enjoyed from both the aesthetic aspect of the leaves, flowers or fruit. Almost all of
the ornamental peppers were edible even taste very spicy. The diversity of chili
pepper cultivars has the potential to be developed as an ornamental. The development
of ornamental peppers are expected to be new innovations to provide good quality
ornamental plants, multipurpose and can be certainly provide economic value to
where it is grown. This research involved multiple genotypes of ornamental pepper
which have generative character as well as the type of growing different. The aim of
this research was to study the inheritance pattern of character in ornamental pepper
based on segregation from crosses that have different traits, to find the degree of
dominance to determine the gene action and heritability of ornamental peppers
character. Materials used in this study consisted of seven parental, six parental were
introduced cultivars and one was local variety. The seven parental were Sweet Pepper
Minimix_Red, Sweet Pepper Minimix_Brown, Sweet Pepper Minimix_Yellow,
Pepper Hot Razzamatazz_Yellow Green Purple stripe, Pepper Hot
Razzamatazz_Yellow Green, Orange Baby and Rawit Trisula Putih. The
experiment was conducted in greenhouse of Faculty of Agriculture Gadjah Mada
University and the screenhouse of Faculty of Agriculture Veteran National
Development University. The research took place from November 2010 until in
August 2012.
The results showed a pattern inheritance of pepper fruit ripe color, fruit shape,
growth habit, flower position, and fruit size on all crosses were controlled by two
genes with epistasis effects, although in some crosses also showed a tendency to
inheritance outside the core. The blocky shape is dominant to triangular. Elongate
fruit shape is dominant to blocky, and triangular fruit shape tend to dominant over the
elongate shape. Crosses with the intermediate growth type and upright growth type
could be able to form a new phenotype that is spread growth type although in some
crosses, upright growth type tends to be dominant. The upright position of flower
tends to be dominant over intermediate flowers. The result of a cross ratio calculation
indicated the potential presence of a dominant effect on the character of the fruit
diameter, fruit length and weight per fruit. Most of the population shows
overdominan gene action, although there are some populations that show the effects
of positive or negative incomplete dominance to complete dominance. Heritability
characters diameter, length and weight per fruit varies from moderate to high.
