description The tradition of reciting the Quran in songlike with the beauty of sound, the resilience of breath, and the spiritual sense of sharpness (dzawq), in Indonesia is renowned as tilawatil quran. That aesthetical act is fairly difficult to learn, yet to be heard in variety of shows and competitions in the arena of Musabaqoh Tilawatil Quran (MTQ). In Indonesia, the traditions of recitation evolved as the Indonesias relationship with the Arab countries established after the opening of the Suez Canal. Since then it grows awesomely as well as the development of MTQ and become great interest to those who want to learn and study the Koran. Therefore the MTQ become the incubation to incarnate the reciters of al-Quran (qori). This fact is quite amazing. Indonesia is not an Islamic State, not an Arab country, and neither the mother earth for quranic tones. But the cultural facticity of the tradition of reciting the Quran and the accomplishment resulted from artistic activity becomes a sign that the art of reciting the Quran has been rooted firmly in Indonesian muslim community. On that basis, this research utilizes interpretive anthropology and sufistic-art approach to find the meaning of the art and tradition of reciting al-Qur'an. In addition, this research will also look at the meaning of Islam expressed by the artist or the qori. This research takes place in Karangarum, Karangarum Province, a place in Java where many qori live, specifically those who residing in the Nirnama Mosque Karangarum. Participant observation in my research field in Pesantren Murottalul Quran Al-Mubarok, Awipari, Cibereum, Tasikmalaya, and Pesantren Murottalul Quran, Mukmin Aenul Mubarok, Nagarakasih, Kersanegara, Cibereum, Tasikmalaya, will enrich the description and sharpen the perspective of this research. The results of this research mention that the qori has been exoticizing, sacralizing and even mystifying the act of recitations. Therefore it becomes a sort of mystical congregation (Tarekat) or the holy way of artistic act. So that reciting the Quran is taking the path of mystical way or artistic act. By reciting the Quran, the qori are mystifying themselves to the highest path of God, spelling history, rivaling the times, throwing the mind and fulfilling the aspirations. Thus, recitation, as well as Islam, is expressed through the way of art (seni berislam). So, Islam is a verse that recited in a tempo, wild, uncertainty of intellectual deviation and out of the layout of the existing standard. However, it is precisely through that way, they give critical paradigm about being Muslim in Indonesia.
