description | The aim of this research is to formulate theory on of Javanese adolescent self
concept when they are with their friends. This research used qualitative method
with grounded theory approach. The subject of this research are Javanese
adolescent: two girls and one boy. Research data is given by indepth interview
and observation. The result of this research showed that Javanese adolescent
has plural selves. As a single individual they have multiple selves. Javanese
adolescents perceive their self as an hierarchy interdependence self. They see
that their self are connected with others. In that connection, they see themselves
as someone who is lower, equal, or higher than others. Javanese adolescent will
activate one of their self according to the situation. That process they called as
self adjustment. Self adjustment is influenced by internal and external factors,
such as hope, emotional condition, need, culture value and norms, social role,
and situation. The self activation process refers in a transactional way by using
the principle of \"If...., then...\". If the situation demands adolescent with the
character of A, then they will activate one of their self to adjust with the situation's
demand. The process of self adjustment starts with identify their friends and
situation, evaluate and compare with friends, choose one of their self, then finally
activate that self. The process continues as a cycle. When they are with their
friends, the subject does not really think about their physic. In a psychological
aspect, the subject can accept themselves and be their own selves. In social
aspect, the subject feels they are equal with friends, they can be accepted, and
be trusted. In moral aspect, the subject can try to be their best self as a friend
and can also protect their friends feelings. The consequence of self concept from
the aspect above tend to experience positive emotion. This causes them to feel
