Summary: | This semantic-based research study investigates the figurative language of Madura proverbs. The
objectives of this study were to describe the types of figurative language contained in Madura
proverbs. Describe the meaning and function of figurative language in Madura proverbs. And
also describe the relationship of culture inside Madura proverbs.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative research method is a method to
investigate an object that cannot be measured by numbers or other measures that are inexact.
Qualitative research can also be interpreted as research is descriptive and tend to use inductive
analysis approach. This research is a descriptive - qualitative emphasis on explanations based on
existing data. The data in this study is proverbs which is the main source book Madura -
Indonesia dictionary written by Adrian Pawitra (2012) and ' Manusia Madura:Pembawaan,
Perilaku, Wtos Kerja, Penampilan, dan Pandangan Hidupnya seperti Dicitrakan Peribahasanya '
by Mien Ahmad Rifai ( 2007 ). The data were taken at 100 proverbs that are often encountered in
writing and in daily conversation and further identify by the type, meaning, and function. Results
of the analysis are presented with formal and informal methods.
Research result indicates that in the style of figurative language metaphor based on Haley�s
hierarchy in nine metaphors, the metaphors in Madura�s proverbs are energy, terrestrial, cosmos,
object, animate, living, and human. Simile in this research includes cosmos, plants, animals,
object, and terrestrial. And personifications in this research are animate personification and nonhuman
personification.
