| description | Border area has become an interesting issue after the conflict between
countries contributed to the making of identity, especially in the frame of
nationalism. The ambiguity of character and standard applied in everyday life of
the population has created the confusion in the definition of identity. This research
explains how the ambiguity is experienced in everyday life of the border
community with a specific case of Badau in West Kalimantan. Historically
speaking, Badau community is a part of Indonesia. However, in term of socioeconomic,
Badau community tends to be a part of Malaysia. Low quality of
infrastructure, less access for education and health facilities, limited capacity of
labor absorption, and the constrain in fulfilling everyday basic needs have been
the facts to state the incapability of the Indonesian government in this area.
There are three important questions with regards to this research. First, how
does the geographical space influence the contestation of the cultural identity in
the border of Indonesia-Malaysia? Second, how does the ethnic background
influence the making of cultural identity between the border communities in the
two nation-states? Third, how does the economic capital influence the selfidentification
process in determining the cultural identity of the border
community? This research is based on the constructivist approach initiated by
Berger and Burke. According to them, identity has to be explained in social
relation around actors as social relation in the society that constitutes the factor in
the construction of social structure applied in the society.
To examine the above mentioned argument, two main qualitative data
collecting methods have been employed |
