| description | Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Most of patients are able to control the seizures with antiepileptic drug use (OAE). On the other hand, there are still many patients who can not control their seizures eventhough they have taken the best treatment regimen. One of the reason is the low mediate adherence in taking appropriate medication treatment regimen. Nonadherence to antiepileptic treatment have an impact on treatment outcomes and lead to undesirable clinical effects. This study was aimed to determine the relationship of medication adherence with antiepileptic frequency and severity of seizures in pediatric epilepsy patients. This study is an analytic and descriptive study using cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in the period 13 May to 13 July 2013 in the Children's Health Installation Sub Section of Neurology Hospital Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta. Samples were taken with consecutive sampling method. The number of subjects were obtained for 36 patients. Data were collected through questionnaires with parents or carers of patients and conducted a review of medical records. Questionnaire to the level of compliance of the instrument Adherence to Medication and Clinic Appointments (AMCA) and seizure severity questionnaire of instrument Hague Seizure Severity (HASSS). Data were analyzed with Spearman rank correlation. Results of the correlation analysis showed an association between medication adherence with the attack frequency (p = 0.013) and there is a relationship between the severity of seizures with medication adherence (p = 0.023). |
