| Summary: | This paper examines about speech act in the imperative utterances of Korean movie Baby
and Me. The objectives of this paper are to identify types of speech acts in the imperative
utterances stated by the characters of the movie, and to identify the factors that affect selection of
speech act.
Analysis in this paper employed theory of Pragmatics, by applying theories of speech act
and politeness principle, which consists of several maxims. The research about speech act in the
dialogue of Baby and Me was conducted in several stages. First stage was the population
selection method and the determination of research sample. The second stage was data analysis
method, by identifying and classifying data. Once identified, then the data were classified based
on the types of imperative utterances. Last stage was the presentation of all results.
The results of the analysis show that all the speech acts exist in the imperative utterances
stated by the characters on Baby and Me. However, there were also violation of several maxims
also. The speech acts selections were based on age, character, the intensity of intimacy, and
speaker emotion.
