This paper used dynamic structuralism by Mukarovsky that analyzed literary work not
only from the intrinsic elements, such as theme, plot, and characters, and extrinsic elements, such
as author�s background, but also related the work to the social and political condition at the
pointed time. To have a clear comprehension of the poems, the descriptive method was applied.
There are two types of data which were used in this paper. The primary data was the poems
entitled Souvenirs of Democracyand To You, while the secondary data was references that
supported the analysis and were also taken from internet browsing.
The result of this study shows the spirit of democracy is inherently seen within the
poems. Walt Whitman views democracy as a very essential thing during the 1850s. It does not
only make the slaves and workingmen as important as other citizens, but it also develop equal
society and emerging capitalistic system. Whitman employs many words which portray his
democratic views and arguments in his poems. This vivid portrayal represents the democratic
vision in both poems. |
