description | Electricity use for air conditioning systems are influenced by thermal loads
from inside and outside the building. Thermal load from the exterior of the
building is affected by ambient temperature and solar radiation on the building
envelope.
The �Gedung Pusat� of Universitas Gadjah Mada, has a unique
characteristics, where each wing is orientated to a certain direction. The middle of
this rectangular building is an open courtyard. Given this uniqueness, therefore, it
is necessary to understand the thermal load profile to determine the level of
energy demand on the cooling system. The research is based on computer
simulation using Autodesk Ecotect 2011 software.
The results have shown that the overall thermal load distribution in terms of
internal gain, ventilation gain, direct solar gain, fabric gain, indirect solar gain,
and interzonal gain are 51.3 %, 19.4 %, 12.1 %, 9.1 %, 8 %, and 0.2 %,
respectively. The total thermal load of the �Gedung Pusat� of Universitas Gadjah
Mada is 407.784.736 Wh. Replacing the glass surface with the double low E glass
type provides the ability to reduce the thermal load by 11.88 %. The use of
vegetation as sun shading reduce the thermal load by 9.53 %. Combination of
double low E glass on the north wing and south wing with vegetation usage as sun
shading on the west wing and the east wing reduce the thermal load by 12.04 %. |
