Summary: | Freiburg Cathedral Boys Choir (FCBC) is a church choir group existing
under the authorithy of Domsingschule Munster (Munster Church Singing School). As
a church choir FCBCs main duty is to sing in masses and church events. However
FCBC is also active in performing in concerts, recording studio, and the television.
There are severeal interesting things about FCBC. Firstly, FCBC singers has
differences in the matter of background. This choir requires the member to qualify a
certain criteria in the context of music and willingness in participating but not in other
aspects like religious belief. Secondly FCBC consists of 65 singers with 7 31 years
old age range. A singer can join FCBC as a child or when he is already an adult. This
makes the duration of involvement among the singers can reach above 10 or 15 years.
The main problem brought up in this research is about motivation. The
problem will be discussed by understanding the perception of the singers about their
own involvement in the choir and about FCBC as a place for them to sing. Using
Bourdieus theory, that informations can be distinguished as habitus (habit), capital,
and field. Those three aspect then create motivation to do pratice.
The result of this research shows that the diversity of choir members makes
each of the singers have their own type of facilitated capital during their interaction in
FCBC. However, that cannot exclude FCBC as a place for the singers to interact,
either with each other and with FCBC as a field. This research also found that the
singers see their involvement as a habit since many of the adult singers are familiar
with church choir since they were little. In conclusion, the practice of singing in FCBC
is influenced by the singers capital and how it is treated in the field and the way that
the field allows the singer to have a habit in singing in a church choir.
