Summary: | When we discuss about smoking behaviour, then automatically were not
merely talk about religion, but also health, economy, social and culture. Cigarette
and smoking behaviour has become an inherent symbol of all Indonesian people,
just like a salt in a food. With the application of haram fatwa on smoking which
issued by Muhammadiyah, this fatwa is expected to influence peoples smoking
behaviour, such as by encouraging someone to obey the fatwa and make him or
her stop or avoiding smoking behaviour.
In this research which conducted in Kauman village, Ngupasan,
Gondomanan Sub-district, Yogyakarta City, I try to observe how local people do
their smoking behaviour at their own neighbourhood. Kauman village is the
birthplace and development base for Muhammadiyah movement which issued the
haram fatwa on smoking. Haram fatwa on smoking is a Muhammadiyah effort in
order to control the cigarette among their peoples in Kauman.
At Kauman village, smoking behaviour not only found among adults, but
also in youths. Smoking behaviour is hard to be separated from local life. This
because cigarette and smoking behaviour has already introduced by their elders
and Kyai/ulama since early times. In fact, smoking behaviour has become a
cultural activity for most people in Kauman. Moreover, the application of haram
fatwa on smoking doesnt make them immediately obey the fatwa and stop
smoking. Those who smoke, however, consider that cigarette and smoking
behaviour have a lot of meaning, and thus could give particular meaning for the
smokers.
