description | Democracy is a governmental system that promotes freedom, justice, and guarantee the individual rights of its people. The Netherlands is one of the role-model democratic countries that respect, promote, and protect the human rights values. It is seen by how Dutch democratic government has been ruled for years, and socially the Dutch government also implement pluralism and multiculturalism principles into its government. With all the diverse interests among its people, Dutch government nowadays is facing an issue related to human rights violation. This is encouraged by the massive amount of Muslims that are migrating to The Netherlands in the last decades. Along with the growing Muslim population in Europe and specifically in The Netherlands, the world has been fighting against terrorism that always linked to Islam and Muslim. It leads some people to establish groups or communities based on anti-Islamic or anti-Muslim perspective in the world.
This thesis will explain how democracy, especially in the Netherlands also can create some paradoxes as opposed to the principles of democracy and human rights itself. The research of this thesis will be focus on the emergence and the growth of Islamophobic or anti-Islamic communities in The Netherlands which is considered as one of the paradoxes of democracy, by observing the two Dutch political parties with anti-Islamic (and anti-Immigrant) ideology, LPF and PVV. It will also show a paradoxical fact that democracy is always be seen good as an instrument to promote and protect human rights values, but in the same time there is also the interstice for democracy to violate the human rights values. |
