Description
Summary:Peoples mindset regarding to waste needs to be changed: Waste materials are actually a collection of raw materials and products. With this mindset, the new inovations of waste utilization will be developed. The first thing that is possible to do is to enrich the types of raw materials from waste composite, like plastic waste which is less biodegradable, so that the utilization can have significant impact on environmental sustainability. HDPE (High Density Polyethylen) is one kind of plastic that is difficult to be recycled and the use of it is quite a large amount as for cosmetic packaging bottles, soaps, and others. This research was conducted to determine the characteristics and also potentials of the use of HDPE plastic waste seeds as a substitute for the coarse aggregate in Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course (AC - BC) in order to get the solution of waste utilization . Seeds of waste plastic which are used in this research are those that through sieve No. 4 and retained on the sieve No. 8 with the variations of plastic content are 0%, 25%, and 50% of the coarse aggregate volume through sieve no. No. 4 sieve and retained on the sieve No. 8. The research began with planning mix design. The plastics were mixed after all of coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, and filler had already mixed on the stove. Marshall testing was done by comparing the values of properties with Spesifikasi Umum Direktorat Jenderal Bina Marga Edisi 2010 (Revisi 1). The durability of pavement was also measured by the value of Retained Marshall Stability ( RMS ) at each variations through standart and 24 hours immersion for the test object at each optimum bitumen content. The results showed that the seeds of HDPE plastic waste can be used as a substitute for coarse aggregate through sieve No. 4 sieve and retained on the sieve No. 8 because the values of volumetric, Marshall, and RMS were qualified the specifications in all plastic content variations (0%, 25%, and 50%). Optimum bitumen content for the variation of the plastic content of 0%, 25%, and 50% respectively were 6%, 6.3%, and 7.1%. From all of the criterias, 50 % HDPE plastic waste has the highest value compared to the other variations, except for the MQ value that 25% plastic content has the highest value compared to the other variations. Void values of all variations were qualified the spesifications from Bina Marga for AC-BC mix.
