Summary: | Oral hygiene is one of the important factors to prevent oral disease. Oral
hygiene can not be separated from debris assesstment in the oral cavity. Debris is
food that is retained in the mouth. Debris can be cleaned with salivary flow and
movement of oral muscles or by rinsing and brushing teeth, except debris stuck
between the teeth or in periodontal pocket. The purpose of this study was to
determine the effectiveness of between munching bengkuang and rinsing
bengkuang juice (Pachyrhizus erosus) to decrease debris.
This research is quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test
group design. The subjects were 30 high school students aged 16 to 18 years old
which is divided into two groups. Group I was treated to munch bengkuang.
Group II was treated to rinse bengkuang juice. Before being treated, the subject
must been eating carbohydrates such as biscuit. Next, two groups were performed
crossing over. Debris measurement used the Debris Index which is component of
Oral Hygiene Index. Data were analyzed by paired t-test.
The results showed munching bengkuang and rinsing bengkuang juice
can decrease debris score. Paired t-test analysis showed that there was no
significant difference between munching bengkuang and rinsing bengkuang juice
on debris reduction (p> 0,05). From these result, it is concluded that there is no
difference in effectiveness between munching bengkuang and rinsing bengkuang
juice on debris reduction.
