description On a periodontitis condition, subgingiva microorganisms are dominated by negative gram bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. One of the products made by Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria is lipopolysaccharide, which can infiltrate through periodontal tissue. It can cause periodontitis which can lead into damaging the blood vessel by affecting endothelial cells, lipid metabolism, and the increase in the number of monocytes. The increasing number of monocytes is an indicator that takes an important role in the occurrence of atherosclerosis because its initial process begins with the attachment of monocytes on endothelial layer of blood vessel. The purpose of this research is to know the difference the number of monocytes between periodontitis and atherosclerosis. This research uses 24 male Sprague dawley mice at the age of 2-3 months by the weight of 170-220 gm as subjects. It is divided into 3 groups which each group contains up to 8 mice. The periodontitis group will be given porphyromonas gingivalis injections by the dose of 0,05 ml, while the atherosclerosis group will be given epinephrine injections by the dose of 0,01 mg/kg. Meanwhile, there will be no specific treatment conducted on the control group. After the second and the fourth week, a surgery will be conducted to calculate the amount of monocytes under microscope using pathological preparations. The data will be analyzed using two ways ANOVA tests and then proceeded by LSD tests. The test results show that there are differences in the number of monocytes between periodontitis group, atherosclerosis group, and the control group. Since there are no significant differences between periodontitis group and atherosclerosis group, it can be concluded that there are no difference in the number of monocytes between atherosclerosis and periodontitis.
