Summary: | Indonesia has a high biodiversity of tree species, which is dominated by
Shorea sp., in Borneo there are about 135 species of Shorea sp. Shorea macroptera
and Shorea retusa are tree species which are unknown their properties. This study
was investigated their fiber dimention and physical wood properties in relationship to
axial and radial positions.
This study used two species of Shorea sp. there are S.macroptera and S.retusa
fiber dimention and physical properties was investigation on the axial position (base,
middle and top) and the radial position (near the pith until close to the bark). Samples
for physical and dimension properties was prepared by respectively British Standard
Method 373 in 1957 and 1957 TAPPI Standard.
There was a relationship between fiber dimention and physical wood
properties of wood. Green moisture content was determined by the variation of
diameter of lumen. The fiber length and fiber wall thickness caused specific gravity
varied with the same tendency. The value of average fiber length, fiber diameter, wall
thickness and lumen diameter fiber S. macroptera is 27,39μm, 17,92μm and 4,737μm
respectively, while for S. retusa 1,460mm, 26,45μm, 18,18μm and 4,067μm
respectively. Green moisture content and air dry S. macroptera is 80,84% and
13,52%, whereas in S. retusa 12,56% and 62,31%. Gravity on volume of fresh, dry
air and kiln dried S. macroptera is 0,481
