Summary: | The process of making acrylic acid from glycerol occurs through two steps.
The first step is the dehydration reaction of glycerol to acrolein and water. At this
step also a side reaction occurs to form acetaldehyde. This reaction takes place in the
adiabatic fixed bed reactor using catalysts tungsten-Zircon in the gas phase at 310 0C
temperature and pressure of 2 atm.
Then on the next step acrolein is oxidized by oxygen in a fixed bed reactor
multitube with catalyst Mo12V4Cu2Fe. Because of the highly exothermic reaction,
dowtherm A is used to keep the temperature between 310 and 350 °C.
The need for water utilities include as much as 642,194.5248 tons / year obtained
from the Cisadane river. Steam as much as 127,661.7024 tons / year generated by
the boiler, fuel oil as much as 185.328 tons / year and dowterm A as much as 388.8
tons / years.
Acrylic acid plant with a capacity of 20,000 tons per year will be established
in Tangerang, Banten with a land area of 2 hectares and employees 150 people. The
plant uses glycerol as the main raw material 38,793.6 tons / year.
Fixed capital investment of Rp 74.144.776,381 + $ 9,991,569.43 working
capital of Rp 11.831.225,406 + $ 10,325,803.68. ROI before taxes 36.90%, and
18.45% ROI after tax before tax while POT is 2.13 years and 3.52 years after tax.
Break-even point 47.18%, shut down point 30.01% and DCFRR 38.09%. In terms of
the economy and the need for the establishment of acrylic acid plant in Indonesia, the
plant with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes per year is quite exciting to be re-examined to
set up in Indonesia
