Summary:Background Mental health is an important factor for adolescent welfare and future. Early detection of behavioral problems plays an important role in preventing evident behavioural problems (abnormal behaviours). Macgue et al (2005) reported that adolescents with behavioural and emotional problems are at risk developing psychopathology in adulthood. Behavioural problems in adolescent are influenced by many factors. Traumatic experience in conflict area is one of the influential factors. Rostami et al (2009) reported that behavioural problems are 1.7 higher in adolescent living in warzone. Therefore, ethnic conflict in Sampit in 2001 might affect children and persist to adolescent. Aims This study aimed to detect the occurrence normal and abnormal behaviour in children who experienced conflict in Palangka Raya and Sampit in their adolescent. Methods This study is an analytic descriptive study with cross sectional design. The study subjects are second year student at 2nd and 4th High School of Palangka Raya, and 1st and 2nd High School of Sampit whose childhood was spent in conflict areas. The subject number is 331 subjects. The data was collected from May-June 2013. The instruments used for data collection was instrument for personal data, modified Youth Self Report (YSR) Indonesian version, and instrument for Psychosocial Stressor Assessment. The data was analyzed using Chi-square test and multiple regressions. Results We found a statistically significant difference in the normal and abnormal behaviour incidence in children who lived in conflict areas in Palangka Raya and Sampit in their adulthood with X2 = 20.733 and p value = 0.000 with 95% confidential interval = 1.790 � 4.397. Conclusion Our study results showed the different normal and abnormal behaviours among adolescent whose childhood were spent in conflict areas (Sampit and Palangka Raya) 12 years after 2001 Sampit ethnic conflict (p < 0.001).
