description The prevalence of NAFLD increases with the increasing of pandemic obesity. Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extend it may have an adverse effect on health. NAFLD is a number disorders of the liver characterized by the presence of macrovesicular fatty liver, fibrosis and cirrhosis without any association with alcohol consumption. It is a health problem in obese persons, both in children and adults. Body mass index (BMI) is one of the crucial indicator to represents obesity. In this study overweight is define as subject with BMI 25kg/m2. Ultrasonography is a noninvasive modality that has been widely used to diagnose NAFLD, with 82% to 89% sensitivity and 93% specificity. Recent studies concluded that NAFLD may alter the spectral of hepatic and portal vein, portal vein velocity and pulsatility index. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the correlation between the portal vein velocity and BMI in overweight subject with or without NAFLD. This was an analytic study with cross sectional design. The study is conducted at the Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, April 2013. Samples were 54 overweight subjects with or without NAFLD with internal control group. The main data BMI in overweight with and without NAFLD and portal vein velocity were analyzed using correlation test (Spearman or Pearson) with p < 0,05. Correlation strenght were then analyzed using linear regression. Multivariat analysis was used to define the correlation among other factors than BMI in overweight with or without NAFLD with portal vein velocity and grey scale ultrasonography finding. There was negative correlation between portal vein peak velocityVmax and Vminand BMI, with or without NAFLD. Maximum peak portal vein velocity (Vmax) in NAFLD significantly had lower mean than in non NAFLD. There was no significant correlation between waist circumferrence (WC) and NAFLD.
