Summary:Kaliurang Street Km.4.5 - Km.5.8 is a public space and has been experiencing rapid growth due to its strategic location. The function of this area is dominated by commercial, so it has influenced the elements of design of this street space. The most noticeable element of its growth and its development is signage. Nowadays, the setting of signage along Kaliurang Street Km.4.5 - Km.5.8 is not ideal. The pedestrians - that walk through the west side and the east side of the street - are public space users who encounter any visual discomfort as a consequence of this expansion of signage. The goal of this research is to solve the signage setting problems that caused visual discomfort of pedestrians then recommend design guidelines. This research was focused on finding the factors that might cause the perception of visual discomfort of pedestrians who walked through the pedestrian ways along Kaliurang Street Km.4.5 - Km.5.8. Those factors were be analyzed with the signage setting, afterwards researcher could emerge some solutions to solve the visual discomfort problems. This research included respondents with certain specified amount of pedestrian population, there were 109 respondents, and conducted at 18 points along the street. The amount is determined from the preliminary research. The result of the measurement of pedestrian visual comfort at Kaliurang Street Km.4.5 - Km.5.8 is some factors of cause that made pedestrians feel visually uncomfortable. Those causal factors as follows: · Factor 1: Lack of harmony of signage · Factor 2: Disordered signage · Factor 3: Lack of compatibility of signage size · Factor 4: Indistinct view of signage · Factor 5: Lack of signage lighting In day time, factor 1 - factor 4 significantly become the causes of visual discomfort. In night time, factor 1 � factor 5 factors become the causes of visual discomfort, above all factor 5 is the most significant factor.
