Summary: | This research, entitled The Authors Views on Education in the Novel Rumah Sekolah yang Saya
Impiken is intended to describe the Kwee Tek Hoays views on the education of peranakan
Chinese in the Dutch East Indies, as reflected in his work titled Rumah Sekolah yang Saya Impiken,
which is part of the corpus of Chinese Malay literature. The creation of a work of literature is
usually done in line with the authors personal views. The inverse also holds true: an authors
work will reflect his or her views. In other words, the writing of a work of literature is a reflection
of the authors personality.
This research has been conducted using the expressive method. Data collection has been
completed using qualitative library research. The method used in this research is the descriptive
method.
The abbreviated results of this research are as follows. First, during the colonial period the
education of peranakan Chinese was a the basis of heated polemics. In these polemics, the
peranakan Chinese were divided into two groups, namely those who supported the Tiong Hoa
Hwe Koan and Chinese nationalism, and those who supported the Hollandsche Chineesche School,
which used an entirely westernized education system. Second, Kwee Tek Hoay, as a peranakan
Chinese, followed this polemic and, taking a neutral point of view, he wrote much on the topic of
educating peranakan Chinese and formulated a number of unique views on education. Third, the
novel Rumah Sekolah yang Saya Impiken, which details Kwee Tek Hoays view of the ideal
school, reflects the authors views on educating peranakan Chinese, including the models used, the
curriculum, teaching style, and education of women.
