of the body's organ systems. The incidence of chronic respiratory diseases,
especially emphysema and chronic bronchitis has increased and becomes a major
cause of chronic disability and disorders in men. Sulphur mining activities done at
Ijen Crater of Banyuwangi District is very dangerous to the health of the workers
due to poisonious H2S gas. This study was conducted to determine factors
associated with lung function disorder of sulphur miners.
Methods: An analytical study using cross sectional methods, a sample of 192
people working as sulphur miners. The dependent variable is lung function
disorder, the independent variables are the length of exposure to H2S gas, smoking
behavior, age, and length of work. Data were collected by conducting interviews,
observation and examination of spirometry.
Findings: Subjects with lung function disorder is as many as 126 people, 38
people with obstructive lung function disorder and 88 others with restrictive lung
function disorder. From the results of unpaired t-test, the mean differences in
pulmonary function of sulphur miners working �5 years and <5 years for FEV1 (p
= 0.0001) and FVC (p=0.0001), aged �40 years and aged <40 years for FEV1 (p=
0.0001) and FVC (p=0.0001), and kruskall wallis test active smokers (p=0.01)
were revealed. Multivariable analysis with interaction test revealed long exposure
to H2S gas and age with statistically significant value (%)of FEV1/FVC with
p=0.045, R-square value =0.07
Conclusions: Disorder of lung function occurred to sulphur miners of
Banyuwangi District who worked �5 years and aged �40 years old in 2013.
Interaction between length of exposure to H2S gas and age could affect the value
(%) of FEV1/FVC by 7%. |
