| description | In defining their own culture, people use material culture as an important aspect of the human existence as it refers to physical objects, resources and space. A physical aspect of the culture determines the behavior and perceptions of people, or a particular ethnic community. Human relations and the perception of the object depend on the social, religious and cultural, as well as the basis of human identity. Although material objects directly reflect the aspects of life, it also allows more insight into the problem. Material culture also describes non-material aspects such as symbols, values, feelings, ways of thinking etc. Cemetery is more than just an element of the space set aside for the burial of the dead, because it has a cultural, religious, social and historical context. In other words, the cemetery can describe a particular community in both local and broader contexts. Often when we talk about cemetery, we tend to think in terms that it can tell us about the past, but the cemetery continues to thrive because of the dynamic nature of the local culture. In this thesis cemetery Gunung Sempu in Yogyakarta serves to explain the construction of the identity of the Chinese Indonesians (Tionghoa) and their lives in the community with majority of Javanese people. The cemetery is a symbolic community that answers the question of who they are, who are the others and what relationships are set. Identity is not something homogeneous or unique, because people always have a plurality of identities. Also, identity does not need to be harmonic (complementary), but can be contradictory. Identity is a process and not a state, and the constant change of identity as personal and social maturity. Therefore, on the example of the cemetery Gunung Sempu can be seen the relationship and interaction between the Chinese Indonesians and Javanese populations through aspects of cultural, religious, social and historical interactions. |
