Summary: | This research paper examines cultural terms and translation problems of
culture terms found in the subtitle of Korean variety show Running Man from
episode 119 to 128. The data were in the form of either words or sentences in
character Korean, Romanization Korean and English containing cultural terms or
translation problem in cultural terms in the subtitle. The results show that 73
cultural terms found in the subtitle from the 10 episodes. From the cultural terms,
there were 11 (15.1%) cultural terms of techno-economic system found, 28 (37%)
to the social system, 17 (23.3%) to the ideational system, and 18 (24.6%) to the
linguistic system found in the subtitles. This deduced that social system category
is commonest used for cultural term in the subtitles. Furthermore, there were 71
strategies used for translating cultural terms. There were 6 (8%) cultural terms
were translated by a more general word, 1(%) was translated by a more
neutral/less expressive word, 39 (55%) were translated by using a loan word or
loan word plus explanation, 16(23%) were translated by paraphrasing with a
related word, 4(6%) were translated by paraphrasing with unrelated words, and 5
(7%) were translated by omission. This shows loan word is the commonest used
strategy in translating cultural terms in the subtitles.
