| description | This research focuses on social and economic conditions in
general, in particular the clove farmers of sub-district Dongko. This
research describes the impacts of clove agriculture on the socioeconomic
conditions of sub-district Dongko. This research uses
historical research method which signifies the importance of sources for
research, both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources such as
the reports of the Central Bureau of Statistics, while secondary sources
derived from research reports and books. This research also uses oral
history as supporting source obtained from farmers, traders, and village
and district officials. This research expected to provide a contribution to
the treasury of historical writing about agriculture in Indonesia, which
is now begin to diminish. This research chooses time limits from 1980
until 1999. Year 1980 was chosen due to the fact that in that specific
time the Dongko clove agriculture began to bloom and contributed to
the escalation of the local people�s welfare along 1980�s. This economic
improvement has significant impact on the socio-economic conditions of
Dongko society. Furthermore, this improvement had also led to
consumptive behaviour among the people of Dongko. The 1990�s was
marked by the decline of Dongko clove agriculture. This setbacks was
caused by BPKC viral bacteria (bacteria and Branch Vessels Wood) that
has undermined hundreds of hectare of clove. This occurence followed
by the fall in clove price. In late 1990�s, clove price succesfully bounced
back to 20,000 rupiahs. However, it was unable to lift the economic
condition of the society because large part of clove plants were already
withered and failed to produce. Finally, Dongko society had to go back
to subsistence farming or move to non-farm occupation as labour force
in urban area and oversea, as well as gold miner outside Java. |
