description | This study of the Yosano Akikosshort story of Kingyo no Otsukai was
conducted by using structuralism and semiotic approaches. This literary work of
Yosano AkikosKingyo no Otsukai was firstly published in a magazine of Shoujo
Sekai in 1907 with the background of Japans pre-modern period of life.
This Yosano Akikos work is very interesting to study using the structural
and semiotic analytical approaches because the title of the short story contains
many signs that are able to represent a variety of meanings contained within it. To
analyze the short story, firstly we must disentangle the intrinsic elements of story
using literary structuralism theory and then analyze the signs in the story using
semiotic theory. Moreover, the short story of Kingyo no Otsukai was made as an
object of the study because it is one of the works of famous female writers in
Japan.
Based on results of the analysis, the writer can interpret the meaning of
title through the figure of gold fish the Red with mature and responsible properties
that are reflected in the content of story. The author of the story, Yosano Akiko,
did not give a title of the story in a literal meaning. Title of short story of Kingyo
no Otsukairepresented two meanings. The first symbol, i.e. kingyo (gold fish),
symbolize the good luck and braveness in accordance with the Japanese societys
belief of the image of gold fish, while the second symbol, i.e. otsukai (helper)
symbolize a dedication in keeping a trust, reflecting a system in Japanese cultural
tradition, i.e. ieand oyabun-kobun systems. |
