Description
Summary:This research attempts to investigate the translation problems and strategies in translating idioms found in Melinda and Melinda (2004) movie. Particularly, it aims to examine the equivalent result of idioms translation in the movie and the use of translation strategies applied by the translator. This study used comparative research method, where the data were selected and analyzed by comparing both the SL and TL text, then classified based on some categories of translation strategies suggested by Mona Baker, and Vinay and Darbelnet. The results of this research showed that there are 10 data in which problems of non-equivalence occur. Specifically, out of 16 data, 14 idioms translated by paraphrase result in 8 non-equivalent translation and 2 idioms, each translated by omission and literal translation, all result in non-equivalent translation. These results suggest that idioms translation of the movie is not quite a good translation by knowing that non-equivalent translation becomes the majority. In addition to translation strategies applied, translators procedures in using the strategies also become the reason for problems in translating idioms in the movie.
