Description
Summary:Terre des hommes is one of the literary works written by Antoine de Saint- Exupéry. This novel tells the altruism attitude of a mail carrier pilot while on duty across three continents, namely Europe, Africa and America. The altruism attitude in this story is illustrated through indirect language. In other words, it is conveyed using the symbols such as poetic and philosophical sentences. Therefore, to facilitate the understanding of the hidden meaning, this thesis uses semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. The theory consists of five code systems such as proairetic code, hermeneutic code, referential code/cultural code, semic code, and symbolic code. Through the analysis and application of the five codes system, it is concluded that the attitude of altruism of the pilots in the Terre des hommes can be accomplished because they have a sense of responsibility, solidarity, empathy, passion and self-confidence.
