Summary: | The increasing population density leads human being to use more energy in
fulfilling their needs. Nevertheless, the availability of current energy resources
decreases along with its increasing usage. Raw material that used ini this research is
sikkam wood (Bischofia javanica). Information about other uses of sikkam wood is
needed to increase the economic value of sikkam wood, by utilizing and process the
sikkam wood to be one of the resources of renewable energy in the form of charcoal
briquette. This research aim to investigate the effects of load pressure and amount of
adhesive in charcoal briquettes made from sikkam wood.
Sikkam wood was carbonized using electric retort at the temperature of 400°
C for three hours. The charcoal briquette pressing was done using hydraulic clamp.
Model of the experimental design used in this research was completely randomized
design with factorial experiments. Two treatment factors were employed in this
research including percentage of adhesive raw materials 5%, 6%, and 7% from the
weight of charcoal or in the form of adhesive solvent volume (20.88 ml, 25.05 ml, and
29.23 ml) and the load pressure (2300 psi, 2500 psi, and 2700 psi) in which each
treatment was repeated five times. The quality testing of charcoal briquette made
from sikkam wood included moisture content, specific gravity, calorific value, ash
content, volatile matter content, and fixed carbon.
The results showed that the quality parameters of charcoal briquette made
from sikkam wood were as follows: the moisture content of 7.377 - 8.699%
