Summary: | Commonly, a transparent radiation shielding are made from lead and glass compound. Lead glass are used as a control room windows in radiodiagnostic and nuclear medicine installation, in radiation source storage, and glove box. Lead glass has disadvantages such as, it has very expensive price and brittle, so it can be easily broken. Those disadvantages are the reason to find another material to replace lead glass as a transparent radiation shielding.
In this study, transparent acrylic resin is choosen to replace glass, and the type of Pb that used in this study are lead acetate (Pb(CH3COO)2). Compositions that is used in this study are 100% acrylic, 10% Pb, 20% Pb and 30% Pb. Samples that have been made, were tested with 60 kV of X-ray, strontium-90, cesium-137, density, and compression strength testing.
Increase the lead composition can make value of attenuation coefficient and density increase too, but decrease the value of compression strength from that sample. Based on the study that have been done, value of attenuation coefficient from X-ray 60 kV with composition: 100% acrylic 0.48±0.08 cm-1, 10% Pb 1.32±0.21 cm-1, 20% Pb 2.49±0.33 cm-1, and 30% Pb 3.42±0.28 cm-1. Value of attenuation coefficient from cesium-137 source with composition: 100% acrylic 4.94±0.09 cm-1, 10% Pb 5.11±0.09 cm-1, 20% Pb 5.14±0.09 cm-1, and 30% Pb 5.19±0.09 cm-1. Value of attenuation coefficient from strontium-90 source with composition: 100% acrylic 5.87±0.09 cm-1, 10% Pb 7.96±0.16 cm-1, 20% Pb 9.26±0.22 cm-1, and 30% Pb 11.67±0.52 cm-1. Value of sample density with composition: 100% acrylic 1.08±0.01 g/ml, 10% Pb 1.15±0.01 g/ml, 20% Pb 1.20±0.02 g/ml, and 30% Pb 1.25±0.01 g/ml. Value of compression strength with composition: 100% acrylic 138.10±9.14 MPa, 10% Pb 91.85±7.40 MPa, 20% Pb 54.23±5.65 MPa, and 30% Pb 78.75±6.88 MPa. The 10% Pb composition, can be used as an alternative way to replace lead glass based on the transparency level, value of attenuation coefficient, value of sample density and value of compression strength from that sample.
