Macroalgae is a photosynthetic organism that could be source of pigment. Sepanjang Beach is one of beaches in Yogyakarta which has the longest coastline and covered by macroalgae. This study aimed to determine species of macroalgae that could be a potential source of pigment by analysis of diversity and percent coverage of macroalgae and its pigment content. Studies on diversity and percent coverage were conducted in September and December 2013 using line transect method. Percent coverage were calculated at 40 sampling points of 10, 20, and 30 m from the coastline. Cladophora sp ., Chaetomorpha crassa, Ulva fasciata (Chlorophyta), Gracilaria salicornia, Laurencia papillosa, Gracilaria verrucosa (Rhodophyta), Sargassum crassifolium, and Padina australis (Heterokontophyta) were sampled for pigment analysis using spectrophotometry method. The result showed that Cladophora sp. and Chaetomorpha crassa were potencial as source of chlorophyll, Gracilaria verrucosa and Laurencia papillosa were potencial as a source of phycoerythrin, while Sargassum crassifolium and Padina australis contained higher of fucoxanthin. There were 36 species of macroalgae in Sepanjang Beach consist of 13 species member of Chlorophyta, 21 species member of Rhodophyta, and 2 species member of Heterokontophyta.
