Summary: | Malioboro Area is a well-known street vendors area in Yogyakarta City. Street
vendors in Malioboro Area have been started to operate since 1981. The
development of street vendors activity fully supported by the Yogyakarta City
government.
This research aims to identify the livelihood strategy of street vendors or street
hawkers in Malioboro area, Yogyakarta city. This research focused on seasonality -
one of vulnerability context in livelihood strategy- that occurs on low season and
peak season. The research method is qualitative using study literature, indepth
interview, and observation. Using purposive sampling as data collection
technique. Among 1.422 street vendors, 50 of them have elected as informants.
From the research result, the livelihood strategy of non-culinary street vendors
in Malioboro Area in low season are to close the booth earlier, supply more
various selling products, offer customers a discount on the selling price of the
products, and use the income accumulation. When it comes to peak season, the
livelihood strategies are open the booth for longer time, supply more various
selling products, use the income accumulation, and make loan proposal to
Malioboro Area street vendors organization.
The livelihood strategy of non-lesehan street vendors when it comes to low
season is use the income accumulation, while it comes to peak season, they
combine the income accumulation and produce more food and beverages. The
livelihood strategy of angkringan street vendors when it comes to low season is to
save income economically, while it comes to peak season, they produce more food
