Summary: | Background: Indonesia as a tropical country is endemic
with mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever.
Mosquito controls as well as protection against
mosquito bites have been carried out. Electric liquid
vaporizer has many advantages. Chemical products have
been widely used, but natural insecticides from plants
are considered safer. One of the plants that are
considered to be a natural insecticide is vetiver.
Objective: To determine the insecticidal power of
vetiver oil (
Vetiveria
zizanioides) in concentration of
10% and 25% as basic material of electric liquid
vaporizer against
Aedes aegypti.
Methods: 2-5 days old adult female
Aedes aegypti
in a
20cm
3
cage inserted into the dark and closed test
chamber and given 4 different treatments, group A as a
negative control group using distilled water as basic
material of electric liquid vaporizer, group B as a
treatment group using 10% vetiver oil, group C as a
treatment group using 25% vetiver oil, and group D as a
positive control group using d-allethrin 0.01 g/l.
During exposure for 20 minutes, mosquito mortality is
observed and recorded every 5 minutes, confirmed again
after 24 hours. Replication is done for 3 times.
Results: The average number of knockdown mosquitoes on
3 times replication in 20 minutes for group A=0, B=0,
C=0, D=18.67=19. The average number of knockdown
mosquitoes on 3 times replication in 24 hours for group
A=0, B=0, C=0.33=1, D=22.67=23.
Conclusion: Vetiver oil (
Vetiveria
zizanioides) as
basic material of electric liquid vaporizer has
insecticidal power against
Aedes aegypti,
but not
effective.
