Summary: | Backround: Diarrhea remains a health problem in developing countries including and diarrhea disease is second leading cause of death in children under 5 years. In Indonesia, diarrhea disease is first leading cause in children under 5 years. Bloody diarrhea or disentery is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, about 10% of all diarrheal episodes in children under 5 year are dysenteric, but these cause about 15% of all death attributed to diarrhea. Infectious diarrhea often assossiated to bloody diarrhea and some complications that can be fatal if delay on treatment.
Objective: To provide an description of clinical and laboratory features of bloody diarrhea in children under five years and to provide description of the frequency bloody diarrhea based on age, sex, nutrional status, type of feeding, and previous treatment of diarrhea in a group of patient with bloody diarrhea in children under five years in Dr. Sarjito Hospital.
Method: Method of this study is descriptive observational and data were collected retrospectively. Study subject wewe all patient with bloody diarrhea in Pediatric Departement Dr. Sardjito Hospital during 2008-2012. The study was conducted at the Medical Record Department Dr. Sardjito Hospital.
Result: The proportion of blood diarrhea compared overall number of diarrhea cases was 7,17%. Bloody diarrhea mos prevalent in children aged 0-11 months (45,31%). Cases of bloody diarrhea is more common in boys, normal nutritional status, type of feeding solid, dan resides in Sleman. Treatment with antimicrobial and zinc are the most widely administered to children before admission to the pediatric departement Dr. Sarjito Hospital, each 16 children (42,11%). Most clinical appearence were found stool mucus (90.63%) followed by fever (82.25%) , nausea /vomiting (59.38%) , decreased of appetite (34.38%), and bloating (21.88%). At the microscopic fecal examination were found 65.63% children positif leukocyte, 9.06% children were positive erythrocyte feces , 31.25% children positive parasite entamoeba , with E. histolytica 21.88%, E. coli 9.38% and both 1.56%. Stool cultures were observed is E. coli (3.39%).
Conclusion: Characteristic of bloody diarrhea in childen under fiver year in Pediatric Departement Dr. Sardjito Hospital during 2008-2012, often occurs in boys, in children aged 0-11 months, normal nutritional status, type of feeding solid, dan resides in Sleman. Treatment with antimicrobial and zinc are the most widely administered to children before admission to the pediatric departement Dr. Sarjito Hospital. Stool cultures examination are rarely performed in children with bloody diarrhea in Dr. Sardjito Hospital.
