| Summary: | The city center of Semarang was located in a district that is now known
as Johar Market district. This historic central urban quarter marked by a town
square, Kauman Mosque and Pendopo Kanjengan (Place of Regent)
continuously changed since the colonial intervention to the square and
drasticly after the city center movement (1970), and now, the district consists
of offices and commercial center of Semarang. Physical degradation occurs,
disordered functions/activities and continuity with memory of the past is
fading.
This research aims to identify the character of a historic urban quarter at
several time period, character changes and factors that influence it. In order
to catch overall condition of �old Semarang City square� district, the
research�s performed in three aspect of character, i.e. physical, function and
meaning aspect and in several time periods from pre-colonial era to present.
Identification of characters, changes and factors that�ve been influencing
will be elaborated to find the basis of the character conservation and
reinforcement strategy.
