Summary: | This research attempts to investigate translation problems at word level found
in the subtitle of film entitled Rectoverso. In particular, it aims to identify and classify
the problems according to translation strategies suggested by Mona Baker. This study
used a library research method to collect the data and a descriptive research method
for analyzing the data. The data used in this research were taken from the original
DVD entitled Rectoverso.
The result of this research shows that there were 34 problems at word level
that classified into seven strategies used by professional translator as suggested by
Mona Baker, namely: translation by a more general word (superordinate), translation
by a more neutral/less expressive word, translation by cultural substitution,
translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by paraphrase
using a related word, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words, and translation
by omission. The most frequent problems found are in the translation by paraphrase
using a related word. Some problems found in this film subtitle shows that the
strategies in translation are important to produce the more equivalence translation.
