CORRELATION BETWEEN RETICULOCYTE HEMOGLOBIN EQUIVALENT (RET-HE) AND SERUM FERRITIN IN NEWBORNS AT RS PKU MUHAMMADIYAH, BANTUL, YOGYAKARTA

description Background. Serum ferritin is the most common parameter used to assess iron status in newborn, can be rising in acute infection, inflammation or malignancy. A new parameter such as Ret-He consider be more accurate, less expensive, easier, faster and earlier detected to assess iron status. Objectives. To knows correlation between Ret-He and Serum Ferritin in newborn at RS PKU Muhammadiyah and whether Ret-He can be an alternative indicator of iron deficiency. Method. Cross-sectional with direct observation is conducted. Serum Ferritin and Ret-He is taken directly from blood cord immediately after baby born at RS PKU Muhammadiyah, Bantul. Result. Among 313 newborns, 56 excluded due to incomplete data. In total 257 included with 94,6% have normal ferritin status with reference range 6-400 μg/L, 99,3% have Ret-He level above cut off point 29 pg. With p= 0,124(p> 0,05), r= 0,095(r= 0,0 - <0,2), and slops of dots on scatter graph without straight line formed shows no any significant relationship between Ret-He with Serum Ferritin. Conclusion. There is no any significantly correlation between Ret-He and serum ferritin in newborn. Ret-He was not shown a positive chance to be alternative indicator to assess iron status of newborn due to lack of previous studies in newborn.
