Summary: | The main purpose of this study is to discuss the role of UNIFEM as an
International Organization in addressing violence against women in Darfur
conflict during 2004-2010. Human rights violation in conflict areas has become a
continually rampant phenomenon. Civilians are often used as a war strategy by
armed groups in the conflict. This is what happened in Darfur, Violence against
women occurs on a large scale in the Darfur conflict since 2003. Women are used
as war strategy by government mercenaries to combating the rebel groups. They
had been subjected to torture, rape, sexual slavery and other sexual violence
during the conflict.
UNIFEM carried out their activities to end violence against women and to
fight for woman rights in the conflict situation in Darfur. UNIFEM's work in
Darfur is executed in several programs, namely: (1) Protecting and Promoting
Womens rights and Leadership in Sudan (2005 - 2006) & Gender Justice in
Sudan (2005-2008). (2) Defending and Securing the Human Rights of Women
and Girls in the Humanitarian Crisis in Darfur (2008-2010). Generally, the
purposes of these programs are to reduce the rate of violence against women and
to maximize the enforcement of human rights in Darfur, and to promote the
empowerment of women in the economic field. Through cooperation with various
parties, including governments, international institutions, local institutions and
Darfur women, the implementation of these programs carries positive outcomes
for the condition of women in Darfur conflict. The existence of significant
achievement on the effort and strategy in Darfur shows that UNIFEM has a
maximum role in helping to stop violence against women and supporting gender
equality in that area.
