| description | This study discusses the role of the International Gay and Lesbian Human
Rights Commission (IGLHRC) in the fight for equal human rights of the LGBTI
(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Intersex) people in the Philippines. The
crisis of tolerance and acceptance of homosexuals in almost all over the world,
especially in Eastern countries become a serious problem when the stereotypes
and prejudice eventually evolve into acts of discrimination, violence, and other
human rights violations. The homosexual�s conditions that are constantly
pressured by authority of the majority society pushed them to grown and become
more solid with the same goal, which is to fight for equal rights. IGLHRC as one
of the gay rights movement is present and plays role in the Philippines.
New Social Movement theory used in this study to investigate the
IGLHRC�s role and efforts through the framing process. The process will form a
collective identity which will be the fondation of how an organization can work
and strengthen the action is executed. Framing processes undertaken aimed at
two things, maintaining a collective identity and social change in society. The
argument of this study that IGLHRC 's role in the fight for gay rights equality in
the Philippines carried out with the framing process and keep the collective
identity of its members. Through this process the authors see that what IGLHRC
and its networks influence informally where the public acceptance of homosexuals
is increasing, but IGLHRC needs to work harder to minimize the violence and
discrimination that still occurs in the Philippines, considering that the Philippines
has the anomalous condition of homosexuality in which it is a very unique at the
same time the Western liberalism and church authorities attract each other. |
