Description
Summary:Characteristics of a region that tends to be different from those of another region, lead to uneven growth among the regions, resulting in regional disparity. High disparity in a region may trigger social jealousy that can lead to conflicts as what happened recently in Sampang Regency. In order that such disparity does grow bigger, it is necessary to immediately address it by examining the disparity condition and what factors influence it. Therefore, this study aims to: (a) measure the level of inter-district disparities that occurred in Sampang Regency, (b) identify factors influencing the occurrence of such disparity, and (c) determine the extent to which the efforts have been made by the government of Sampang Regency in reducing the disparity that occurred. This study employed quantitative deductive methods with secondary data supported by observations and interviews. The secondary data in the form of all districts in Sampang Regency were analyzed statistically and spatially. Statistically, the data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression. While spatially, the secondary data were put into a map to make it possible to compare the map pattern with the map pattern of GDP at constant prices. The results of this study indicate that the Williamson Index of Sampang Regency is at 0.4 while its Theil Index is at 0.13, meaning that the level of disparity is considered small, but from 2009 to 2011, it tended to rise. Based on Klassen typology in 2011, it was revealed that 7 out of 14 districts located in Sampang Regency remained considered as relatively lagging regions. In addition, it was found that the most influential factors on the variation of the value of GDP at constant prices which were indicators of regional disparity are population density, the rough rate of high school enrollment and the ratio between the road lengths to the total area. In relation to this disparity, the government of Sampang Regency has made an effort to increase the growth of the central part of the region which belongs to lagging regions.
