description Background : Access to drugs, especially essential drugs is a human right. The high use of essential medicines in government health services (such as puskesmas) > 90%, was not followed by other health facilities. This is indicated by the prescribing of essential medicines in private hospitals and drugs store is less than 49% and 47%. This situation shows that the essential drugs concept is not yet fully understood and applied. Essential drugs concept should be promoted in the public and private sector. To view the current situation of drug use, especially in non-governmental hospitals is still constrained by the lack of comprehensive data. Objective : To get an overview of current data of essential drugs use in the nongovernment hospitals using the WHO drug use indicators. Methods : The study used observational research with the case of study design was descriptive and analytic. Quantitative survey data with prescription and documents retrieved retrospectively. Data analysis was based on the WHO drug use indicators then presented in tables or graphs. Results : Based on the WHO drug use indicators, the percentage of essential drug from DOEN 2011 in RS1 and RS2 is 38% and 28,9%, the percentage of drugs prescribed by generic name at RS1 and RS2 are 41,4% and 21,7%, the average drug per patient in RS1 and RS2 is 2,2 and 3,6 items, the average cost per prescription in RS1 and RS2 is Rp 110.083 and Rp 102.370 (3,5 and 3,7 UMH). Conclusion : Drug use based on the WHO drug use indicators at both hospitals are still very far from the existing requirements. The percentage of essential medicines derived from the DOEN 2011 and drugs prescribed by generic name as still very low, the average per patient medications is very high, and the average cost per prescription is relatively expensive.
