description | Background: Menignioma is a slow-growing benign brain
tumors. The etiology of meningioma is still unknown,
however gender-spesific hormones especially
Progesterone Receptor (PR) is believed to have a role
in the pathogenesis of this tumor. PR in meningioma
influences tumors prediction and progression. The role
of PR in benign meningioma based on age and gender is
still unclear.
Objective: This study aims to seek for differences
between PRs expression in meningioma with variation of
age and gender.
Methods: This study was a descriptive comparative study
conducted retrospectively with the paraffin block of
all meningioma patients from year 2011-2012 that were
available at the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory Dr.
Sardjitos hospital as subject. The samples were sliced
then examined by immunohistochemistrys technic to
detect progesterone receptors expression. The average
ages difference with PR expression in benign
meningioma was analyzed with Independent t test. The
different proportion of gender with PRs expression was
analyzed with Fisher test.
Results: The study did not find any significant
difference of average age and PRs expression, however
there were significant differences of gender proportion
with PRs expression. The study shows that 50% of
meningiomas expressed progesterone reseptors with the
proportion of female patients (58,3%) higher than male
patients.
Conclusion: In this study, there was no significant
difference between PRs expression and average ages but
there was significant difference with gender in beningn
orbitocranial meningiomas. |
