Godean I Primary Health Center (PHC) was the PHC with the highest reported numbers of patients with essential hypertension in the district. Type D personality, characterized by a joint tendency towards negative affectivity, e.g. worry and gloom, and social inhibition, e.g. reticence, has been associated with increased cardiac related mortality. We did a study among patients consulting at the Godean I PHC to determine if there was a link between type D personality and essential hypertension.
Methods : We did a case-control study among 18-60 year old patients consulting at the Godean I PHC. Cases were patients diagnosed with essential hypertension on January- Juny 2013. Controls were patients without essential hypertension on the same period. Patients were simply random sampled until 139 cases and 139 controls were enrolled in the study. We administered the standard DS-14 questionnaire to subjects to determine if any of them had type D personality and also collected data on demographics, obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking habit, physical activity, salt consumption, and stress. Data were entered into a computer and analyzed using Stata software. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were done.
Results : Ages of subjects ranged from 22 to 60 years (mean 45,67±10,22). Type D personality was significantly associated with essential hypertension (OR 3.07, 95% CI: 1.83-5.16). Even after adjusting for age, sex, obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking habit, physical activity, and salt consumption, the association was still statistically significant (AdjOR 2.18 |
