description | Research of synthesis methyl ester sulfonates surfactant (MES) from palm oil has been done through two-stage reaction. The first stage was transesterification of palm oil with methanol and NaOH catalyst for 90 minutes at a temperature of 65 ºC. Second stage was methyl ester sulfonation with sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) at a temperature of 90 ºC using CaO catalyst as much as 1% (w/w) with sulfonation time variation.
The result showed that the methyl ester of palm oil contained two dominant esters, namely methyl palmitate (46,15%) and methyl oleate (48,42%). The result of IR spectra showed that methyl ester sulfonation has been successfully achieved with NaHSO3. The sulfonation time for 4 hours produced optimum MES which has an active ingredient content of 11,73%, was able to lower the water surface tension by 34,75 dyne/cm, stabilized water-xylene emulsion up to 62,73%. |
