| Summary: | On the new order period, the Tionghoa (Chinese Indonesian) people got discriminated on many aspects of their life, including the prohibition of expressing anything related to their ethnicity. Chinese-esque things must be viewed as a foreign culture of which cannot be recognized as a part of themselves. On the contrary, there are many of the Tionghoa people who has a well-known reputation in the world of Indonesia's comics. Comic, as it is known, is one of the media used for expressing ideas.
This paper will analyze how the Chinese-Indonesian comic artists speak out about their ethnicity in comic works. research done by reading the comics that made by the Chinese-Indonesian comic artists, interviewed the artists, collectors, and observers, as well as the Chinese community in general.
This research will focus on how the Tionghoa comic authors preferred to \"lay low\" in creating their comics by not using the chance to voice their ethnicity. This indicates that the new order repression is still too powerful, and also showed the diminishing Tionghoa ethnicity within the Tionghoa descendants
