Summary: | Cyprus is a former British colonial and located on Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus has two main
ethnic groups, Turkish and Greek. These two ethnic groups have a very long history. Since the
Byzantine era in the 11th century until today's modern era, these two ethnic groups continue to
experience conflict. Conflict between these two ethnic groups has increased after the British
granted independence to Cyprus. The peak of Cyprus conflict between the Greek Cypriot and
Turkish Cypriot was happened on December 21, 1963 with the death toll reached more than 500
people for both parties.
Seeing this scale of conflict growing bigger and bigger, representatives from the UK ,
which is one of the guarantor states in the Treaty of Guarantee in 1960 , and the government of
Cyprus have requested to the Security Council (UNSC) United Nations to take action to prevent
further conflict in Cyprus .UN, which has one of its main purposes is 'to keep peace throughout the
world', respond to request for assistance by issuing a UN Security Council resolution 186 which
contains the establishment of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP),
which became active on March 27, 1964 and still active until now.
