Summary: | A research has been done to find out the part of seagrass Cymodocea sp. which has
potential of antioxidant and to evaluate its toxicity. Leaves and stems extract of Cymodocea
sp. were made by macerating with three kinds of solvent, i.e. methanol, ethyl acetate, and nhexane.
The examination of rate total phenol was determined using Follin-Ciocalteu method.
The laboratory experiments of antioxidant activities was done by spectrophotometrical method
using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) while the level of toxicity was done by BSLT
(Brine Shrimp Lethality Test). The results showed that methanol extract of Cymodocea sp.
leaves had the highest in total phenolic compounds (26.73 mg GAE/gram extract) with the
antioxidant activity (IC50) of 518.57 ppm. Based on value of IC50, sample that mentioned
appertained weak antioxidant. The determination of toxicity result showed that all samples of
Cymodocea sp. were toxic to the shrimp larva Artemia salina Leach. The ethyl acetate extract
of Cymodocea sp. leaves had the most toxicity with the LC50 of 67.14 ppm. The
phytochemical test showed that Cymodocea sp. extract contained saponin, steroids, flavanoids,
phenol hydroquinone, and terpenoids class.
