Description
Summary:Gua Cemara beach included in the rehabilitation of coastal areas conducted by Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada since 1996. Casuarina equisetifolia chosen as the plant rehabilitation in Gua Cemara beach. C. equisetifolia has a huge and dense canopy with needle-shaped leaves which able to reduce velocity of sea breezes past that would make a windbreak plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the average reduction in average sea breeze velocity by C. equisetifolia standing and determine the most effective multiplication between the width of the stand and total area density (WAd) C. equisetifolia stands in reducing average sea breeze velocity. The research was conducted by dividing Gua Cemara coastal forest area into 34 line plots with 10 m width and 10 m spacing. Plots were placed with systematic sampling along the plot line. The data taken to get stands data and wind speed data. The stand data includes the height of stands of trees, canopy thickness, canopy width, stands long, stands wide, and Digital Hemispherical Photo (DHP). Wind speed data includes data on average sea breeze velocity before passing C. equisetifolia stands and after passing C. equisetifolia stands. Sea breeze velocity data were analyzed using paired t test. The results showed that the average sea breeze velocity that passes through C. equisetifolia stands is reduced by 6,79 m/s or 90.61 % of the initial one. This show C. equisetifolia stands able to reduce significantly the sea breeze velocity. There were no significant differences between some classes of C. equisetifolia width of stand and total area density against the reduction of average sea breeze velocity. The smallest C. equisetifolia width of stand and total area density has been able to reduce the sea breeze velocity in Gua Cemara coastal forests significantly.
